The Hollywood Legion Theater is an integral part of the American Legion Post 43. The Post's 90-year-old Egyptian Revival-style Post building including the theater, bar, outdoor deck and event-ready rooms has a total capacity of 1,500. A $6 million makeover of the building and theater completed in 2019 upgraded facilities and capabilities while retaining the structure’s historical characteristics and charm. The renovation reflects the membership’s commitment to the future while acknowledging a storied past. Post 43 currently has a diverse and growing membership of 1,400 veterans, sons, and auxiliaries.
Post 43 was chartered in 1919 by World War I veterans in the motion picture business. Members have included Hollywood luminaries such as Charlton Heston, Mickey Rooney, Gene Autry, Ronald Reagan, Stan Lee and more. Post 43's clubhouse includes an iconic art-deco bar and downstairs game room, offering a nostalgically convivial atmosphere. Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart downed their cocktails and shot pool in what has been dubbed “The longest continuously operating speakeasy in Hollywood.”
The 482-seat Legion Theater is the sole Hollywood theatrical venue owned and operated by veterans. With state-of-the-art digital projection, an acoustically optimized sound system and 35mm and 70mm film projection capabilities, the theater also offers traditional movie concessions and special event catering. As one of the premier venues in Southern California, the Legion Theater has been the site of nationally prominent events including Apple TV’s The Morning Show and the TCM Classic Film Festival.
The Hollywood Legion Theater at Post 43 is located at 2035 N. Highland Ave., just south of the Hollywood Bowl. Parking is available in the Post's lot and across Highland in the lot next to the Hollywood Heritage Museum at Milner and Highland Ave.
